Frontier models are the most capable (and most expensive) generation from each lab. In April 2026: Claude Opus 4.7, GPT-5 and o3, Gemini 2.5 Pro, Grok 4. These sit at the top of SWE-bench, GPQA, MATH, and MMLU benchmarks, and cost $5-$75/M output tokens. Most production apps don't need frontier models for most requests — they're worth the premium only on tasks where the last 5-10% of capability prevents real failures.
